We underwent a major renovation (including increasing the size of the garage and bedroom, new laundry room, redone bath, new exterior patio, and a new roof over all) and used Stone Lion. I was really worried about the work, the money, and the lien laws and I had a good feeling about owner Scott Subko from the beginning. For example, of the four general contractors recommended by our architect, only Scott showed up for the first meeting with exactly what I asked him (and everyone else) to bring, that is, all insurance and licensing documentation and plenty of references. When he submitted his bid, it was again exactly what I asked everyone for but only got from Scott: a proposal that spelled out EVERYTHING and broke down the prices item by item. Our final contract was extremely detailed, just the way I wanted it. Because we covered every single thing, there were never any surprises. As far as price, he wasn't the highest or the lowest but, unlike with the other bidders, you could see just what you were paying for. (In fact, because he included a few extra things that the others did not, which I elected to keep in, his bid was even lower than all but one of the others.)
Working with Scott was a real pleasure and a relief. I'm a worrier and a nit picker and he met with me any time I wanted and answered every question I had -- over and over! I trust him completely to do things the right way and his work is beautiful. I was very specific about design details and knew exactly how I wanted things to look and he executed it all perfectly and always with a great attitude. The house not only looks fantastic but it is solid and I am not worried about any structural issues arising in the future. That's because I believe Scott knows what he's doing and, if he has a question (as when he was making the connections between the existing and new roof trusses), he's secure and smart enough to ask other experts for their opinions (his family of contractors!).
Finally, it was important to me to use a general contractor who personally did or at least supervised the work and who knew exactly what the agreement called for. Stone Lion is a small company and that means no middle person to interpret contract provisions differently. It also means that the job could take a little longer than planned because life happens. But if you want to be sure of quality work, you can't do better than Stone Lion. I highly recommend Scott and his company.
