Review 5/21/2009
Initially I was please with My Pets. When I found them on the Internet and visited their store. I found a beautiful Shih-tzu puppy that I fell in love with. Jino who is the store owner gave me all the information on the puppy when I purchased him verifying he had his puppy shots up to date and had told me that the puppy had been given a thorough examination by his Vet. He produced a document verifying the good heath of the puppy that was signed by the Vet. Everything seemed fine with the puppy except that he was scratching a lot. I thought maybe he had fleas and even brought it to Jino's attention at the counter in his store as I was signing the paperwork. 3 days later, my puppy is still scratching. I take the puppy to my own vet who gives me a topical ointment to put on the puppy for skin rash. 2 weeks later the puppy is scratching even more and now has a crusty build up on the edges of his ears under the fur. I take him to my vet again who scrapes his ears and puts it under a microscope and detects that the puppy has scabies (Sarcoptic Mites), which is highly contagious. My puppy had these scabies mites when I bought him from My Pets and that is why he was scratching so incessantly worse and worse everyday. When I called Jino to tell him he had sold me a puppy with scabies and that he should have his other puppies checked for it, that it was highly contagious he initially seemed agitated by the fact that I had waited over 2 weeks to inform him about this. Originally I was calling Jino out of courtesy to inform him, so that he could have the other puppies checked for this, especially the ones that were scratching. I had waited over 2 weeks to tell him because it took over 2 weeks for my Vet to properly diagnose the issue. Turns out that scabies or Sarcoptic Mites are difficult to diagnose and it required a skin scrapping that had to be viewed under a microscope. Since the scabies mites burrow beneath the dermal layer of skin it is often times not enough to take a skin scrapping. My vet took several layers of skin off the puppies ears till they were bleeding in order to get to the proper depth in order to see the mites. Jino acted responsibly in the fact that he reimbursed me for my vet bills by reimbursing me 33% of the cost. It took him a month, but I did receive the check, along with the puppies UCA registration paperwork. I love my puppy, but he has been made to suffer needlessly with the itching caused by the mites that have burrowed under his skin. This whole scabies issue has been a nightmare to have to deal with. Between the costly vet bills, the expensive medication, the complete disinfecting of our entire house several times over the course of weeks, and the transfer of scabies to my husband and I, which caused us to have to seek our own medical attention, at our own cost and having to purchase prescription medication for our own bodies in order to get rid of the ones that had burrowed under our skin.....well you can imagine. 8 weeks after buying our puppy, we are still trying to get ride of the infestation since the life span of these sarcoptic mites is 45 days. I would have preferred it if we never had to deal with this and honestly we should not have had to deal with this issue if the puppy had been properly checked and treated by the Jino's vet before he was sold to us.
