I see so many people here who are complaining about advertising being misleading or false, and I have to be honest in saying, I have no clue what they are talking about. I went through PeopleSmart to see what public information is posted about me, and I found the sign up process to be very clear. It's perfectly stated that Background Reports aren't included in the membership. The only way you could miss this was if you didn't read the page. It tells you in 3 different places that you're being charged for the background report before you even put in your credit card information. It also tells you this in the terms of the website. I'm guessing they probably didn't read those either. Perhaps you folks shouldn't be so quick to judge businesses when you're not taking the time to actually read what you're signing up for.
When I got in the site, I was able to find out all kinds of information is available. The best part about it is if you want to have your information removed from the site, you can do it yourself without having to send anything in to them. Most of the other sites out there make you mail or fax something in with a copy of your drivers license. All I had to do was tell them what information I wanted removed, and it was done in a few days. I didn't have to mail anything either. I could do it right on their website.
The information on the website was a bit out of date, but when it's coming from other public records I guess I can see how it wouldn't be all accurate. Besides, it said that in Terms and conditions too, so it's not like I didn't know that before going in.
I rated them four stars because of two things.
1. Most other websites have zip code and area code databases that you can look things up in, and these guys don't. Would be a good value to have included.
2. The phone number is only listed in one place on the website, in the Terms. You would think they would have a very simple 'Contact Us' page with all their contact information, but that page only has an e-mail form. I suppose it's a good thing I read the terms, so that i saw the phone number ahead of time.
Oh, one other thing. The layout of the website is a little bit clumsy. I didn't find the interface very friendly to use. But, that's just a personal opinion. I was still able to find what I came for.
All in all, not bad. Certainly much more friendly than a lot of the other sites.
