Why does the better business bureau give paypal an A? Is it based on how fast they pay your fees? I am a business owner and we too have been scammed by paypal. What i do not understand is that bbb.org claims to want to help the consumer, businesses build trust? How can we if bbb grants paypal an A regardless of countless complaints and scamming hardworking individuals and businesses. It is time an outside agency review bbb.org Business owner Paul

Paul,

The rating a Better Business Bureau assigns a company is determined by a scoring algorithm that includes such elements as its type of business, length of time in business, compliance with competency licensing requirements, complaint volume, complaint history, seriousness of complaints, complaint response behavior, whether or not the business has committed to our standards, and our experience with the industry that the business is in (some are more problematic than others). Complaint generation risk and companies' resolution behaviors have been tracked and scored by BBBs across the nation for the past one hundred years. Our perspective and methods still stand the test of time and are an important and valid tool and benchmark for both consumers and businesses for evaluating marketplace interactions.

Paypal is a very large company and the BBB takes into consideration the size of a business when determining its rating.

I ordered a wedding dress over EBAY with PayPal being in the middle of it and when I had to send back the dress because the place had made it red instead of ivory, neither PayPal or EBay would life a finger to help. . . and that merchant still has a 100% positive rating. Imagine, that lady who is the CEO spent millions in her political campaign but can't afford to refund $165.00 to somebody that's unemployed and has no benefits left.

PLEASE BE ADVISED that eBay, the owner of Paypal is in partnership with the Better Business Bureau. It is strongly advised that you proceed with caution when reviewing any reports from this company. You can verify at the following BBB URL that eBay with other companies are part of the BBB's Advisory Committee for their Board of Directors, which is a clear conflict of interest. The conflict of interest is created by the fact that consumers are complaining about the same companies that are advising the BBB. BBB Advisory Committee: http://www.bbbonline.org/about/boardDir.asp

I have since learned that a friend's son paid for a $1500 engagement ring over EBAY via PayPal and he never got the ring, and of course, never saw his $1500 again. I'll never order anything over EBay again; I'll just do without.

There was a piece on 20/20 last month on the BBB extorting money from small businesses to get better ratings. Businesses with 1 complaint could get an F or D rating. So how does Paypal with over 7000 complaints get an A rating? It’s because they buy it!

Jeffrey,

A small business with an UNANSWERED complaint might earn a low grade. One complaint with a response that addresses the allegations will not lower an otherwise trustworthy business to a D or F rating whether they are Accredited or not.

PayPal - with a customer base of millions, maintains a high rating because it has responded to all of the complaints with adequate consideration. 7000 complaints out of millions of customers is equivalent to a smaller business with 2 or 3 complaints.

Paypal would be rated on the same scale whether they were Accredited or not.

The businesses in the 20/20 report were not “Unanswered” and 1 complaint did cost them a lower rating. Your logic that PayPal equivalent rating is 2 or 3 should still bring their rating down considerably. If they are judged by the same rules as smaller businesses.

Also, if you call Paypal hiding behind their “terms and conditions” as an “Answered” complaint, you are not being diligent in your inquiries. Paypal arbitrarily gives a customer of mine a full refund after a month and his leaving positive feedback for me on Ebay. The Post Office tells me he hasn’t returned his item for inspection. Paypal goes against the Post Office and says he did and they side with him. I bring this up to Paypal and they hide their “terms and conditions” even though they know they made the wrong decision. Paypal is a Bully and should be treated as such. Also, I did leave a complaint with the BBB for Paypal because of this and I never heard from them regarding their findings.

This person must have contacted Paypal. I (suddenly/coincidentally)!!!! get a collections email from them after months of not receiving emails from them. As I said, Paypal is a Bully and should be treated as such. I still have yet to hear back from the BBB.

It is as they say. Paypal is a bully. They lie, hide behind their terms and conditions, and do whatever it takes for them to be able to keep your money for as long as humanly possible. It has only been 4 months for me, but Paypal has still been unable to give me tangible proof as to why they are holding my money. Just saying that they believe that I have multiple accounts isn't proof. I couldn't go to the police, and say that 'I believe that Paypal is stealing my money.' Because the law enforcement agencies require solid proof before they'll take any action against the company/individual. I asked them for 3 months why my account had been limited, but it wasn't until I threatened to file complaints with the BBB and various other agencies that I got any type of an answer.
